"We are growing and constantly looking for employees with a good scientific education," says Matthias Peterhans, CEO of CAScination. Reason enough for the Bernese company itself to do something about promoting young talent and to actively support the MINT Day at the Gymnasium Hofwil. In German the acronym MINT stands for mathematics, computer science, natural science and technology.
What does a software developer in a medical technology company actually do all day long? This was only one of many questions that the approximately 100 students of the second grade of Gymnasium Hofwil brought to MINT Day on 4 July. Benjamin Eigl was able to give them answers to their questions and a lively impression of his varied everyday work. As part of his doctoral thesis at CAScination, he develops innovative software solutions for navigation systems for cancer treatment.
However, a typical working day for the 25-year-old involves much more than just programming software code. On the one hand, there is the intensive coordination in the team, which is an important part of his work. On the other hand, regular meetings with doctors, the future users of his software, are crucial for the development of a market-ready software product. "Observations directly in the operating theatre are an important part of my work to get a better idea of the possible applications of surgical navigation," says Eigl, who also regularly exchanges views with colleagues at important international conferences.
The MINT Day on 4 July with insights into professional practice is embedded in a complete week at Hofwil Gymnasium, which is all about MINT activities and is intended to arouse students' curiosity about scientific questions and professions. Two-day practical workshops on robotics, cryptology, space/orbital mechanics, microfluidics and chemical syntheses are just as much part of the varied program of MINT Week as excursions to companies and research institutes.
